Buy a phone number

Buy a number to call from and to take calls on. You pick the country, type and number, choose who owns it and who else can use it, then confirm. The number is ready to use as soon as the purchase goes through.

Before you start

  • Users with the Owner or Admin role can buy numbers.
  • Every user gets one free local number in the US, UK, Canada or Australia. Extra numbers are billed monthly at the price for their country and type. See pricing.
  • In the free trial, your trial includes one free number. Add a card to buy more. The trial includes up to 5 numbers. Choose a plan to add more.
  • A paid number is paid by card when it is bought, so it needs a user who manages billing. Otherwise the screen reads Ask an owner or admin who manages billing to buy it.
  • If buying numbers reads Not available on your workspace, contact support.

Choose a number

  1. Open Phone Numbers and click Add Number.
  2. On Number details, pick a Country.
  3. Pick a Number type: Local number, Mobile number or Toll-free number. Only the types sold in that country are shown.
  4. Narrow it down if you like: a State or province and an Area code, or a Toll-free prefix for a toll-free number.
  5. To find specific digits, type them in Search for a specific number and choose Contains, Starts with or Ends with.
  6. Check the Suggested number and its price. Click shuffle for another suggestion, or Choose a different number to browse the list.
  7. Click Save & Next.

Name it and choose who uses it

On Confirm details:

  • Friendly name (optional): a label your team will recognise, like Boston Main.
  • Owner (required): you own the numbers you buy unless you pick someone else.
  • Share with users (optional): these users can call from this number. Incoming calls follow its call routing.
  • Shared teams (optional): the members of these teams can call from it too, and the teams ring for its incoming calls by default.

Countries that ask for verification

Some countries ask who a number belongs to before it can be sold. For those, Confirm details shows Verification required:

  • With no submission yet, click Start verification. You verify once, as a business or an individual, with a few details, a proof-of-identity document and an address. It covers every number you buy in that country afterwards.
  • While your submission is under review, you can buy the number once it is approved.
  • With an approved submission, pick it under the verified submission field. If you have only one, it is picked for you.

Buy it

  1. Check the Pricing line. A free number shows Included in your plan. A paid number shows its monthly price, the amount due today and when it renews.
  2. Click Confirm & Purchase for a free number, or Continue to payment for a paid one and pay by card.
  3. You see Number purchased, and the number appears on Phone Numbers.

If you see The carrier did not accept this purchase, try again or pick another number.

After you buy

  • Click the number on Phone Numbers to open its settings: General, Call routing, Greetings, Recording & transcripts and Compliance.
  • A new number starts on Direct line, the System default: it rings the number's owner and teams, then goes to voicemail. To change that, see Build a call workflow.
  • The owner, its shared users and the members of its teams can call from it on the dialer. Campaigns call from the number picked on the campaign.
